Celebrated on 20 January, the day honors Saint Sebastian, the city’s patron saint, and is known for its continuous drumming processions, elaborate uniforms, and lively public participation.

Tamborrada is one of the most emblematic cultural celebrations in San Sebastián. Over a 24-hour period, the entire city is filled with the rhythms of drums and barrels, performed by thousands of participants dressed in traditional costumes.

The tradition dates back to the 19th century, when townspeople waiting at the fountains drummed on their water barrels to mock the soldiers marching through the walled city. Most of the music, including the March of San Sebastián, was composed by Raimundo Sarriegui in the second half of the 19th century, and the drummers have worn Napoleonic-era uniforms since the 1880s.

Datum und Dauer

The festival takes place every year on 20 January, a public holiday in San Sebastián.
