Bastille Day (F\u00eate nationale, or simply le 14 Juillet) is the national holiday of France, celebrated every year on 14 July. It commemorates the Storming of the Bastille on 14 July 1789, a key event of the French Revolution, as well as the F\u00eate de la F\u00e9d\u00e9ration of 14 July 1790, which celebrated the unity of the French nation; it became the official national holiday in 1880. Bastille Day is marked across the whole country, but the largest celebrations take place in Paris, where hundreds of thousands of people gather for the parade, the concert and the fireworks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Military Parade on the Champs-\u00c9lys\u00e9es<\/strong> – The day begins at 10 AM with the military parade, held every year since 1880 and described as the oldest and largest regular military parade in Europe. Starting from the Arc de Triomphe, it moves down the Champs-\u00c9lys\u00e9es to Place de la Concorde, where the President of France watches with the government and invited foreign guests. Units of the French armed forces march on foot and in vehicles, followed by helicopters and military aircraft.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
Flugschau<\/strong> – As part of the parade, the French Air and Space Force performs a flyover, opened by the Patrouille de France jets trailing smoke in the colors of the French flag.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
Firefighters\u2019 Balls (Bals des Pompiers)<\/strong> – On the evenings of 13 and 14 July, fire stations across Paris open their doors for lively public dances. All Bastille Day events in Paris are free. For a good view of the parade, arrive on the Champs-\u00c9lys\u00e9es by 8 AM. The Champ de Mars is reached through security checkpoints and closes when full, so come in the afternoon, or watch the fireworks from the bridges and quays of the Seine or from viewpoints such as Montmartre.
