It lies beneath the former coastline cliffs of the Eyjafjöll volcanic region, which were created thousands of years ago when the sea reached farther inland. The waterfall is formed by the Seljalandsá River, which originates from the Eyjafjallajökull glacier. With a height of about 60 m (197 ft), Seljalandsfoss is one of the most accessible waterfalls in Iceland and a frequent stop for travelers exploring the South Coast.

The area around Seljalandsfoss also contains several smaller natural attractions. A short walk north of the main waterfall leads to Gljúfrabúi, a hidden waterfall partially enclosed inside a narrow canyon. Nearby landscapes include green meadows, volcanic cliffs, and views toward the glaciers of the Eyjafjöll region. The location is especially popular for photography because the waterfall faces west, which allows dramatic lighting conditions during sunset and in summer months when the midnight sun illuminates the surrounding cliffs.

Seljalandsfoss is easily reached by car from Reykjavík in about 1 hour 45 minutes via Route 1, with a designated parking area located just a few minutes’ walk from the waterfall; parking costs 1,000 ISK per car, paid by card at the machine or online. Regular sightseeing tours along Iceland’s South Coast also include Seljalandsfoss as a stop together with nearby attractions such as Skógafoss waterfall and the black sand beaches near Vík. Basic visitor facilities, including parking, restrooms, and walking paths, are available at the site, making it one of the most convenient natural landmarks for tourists traveling through southern Iceland.

Ein 60 m hoher Wasserfall an der Route 1 im Süden Islands mit einem Weg hinter dem Wasservorhang;
