It lies about 100 km southwest of Oslo and is easily accessible by road. Built in the early 13th century (around 1200–1250), Heddal is the largest stave church in Norway, a type of medieval wooden church constructed using a distinctive post-and-beam technique known as “stave” construction.

Heddal Stave Church can be reached by car from Oslo in about 1.5–2 hours via the E134 highway. Visitors traveling by public transport can take a train or bus to Notodden, followed by a short bus ride or taxi to the church, which is located about 5 km from the town center.

In 2026 a ticket costs 110 NOK for adults and includes a short guided tour in Norwegian or English; tickets are sold in the café next to the church. The church is open from mid-May to mid-September, usually from 10:00 to 16:00 and until 17:00 in July and early August; on Sundays with a service it opens around 12:15. A visit usually takes 1–2 hours, including time to explore both the interior and the surrounding grounds.

Norwegens größte Stabkirche, eine Holzkirche aus dem 13.
