Die Oude Kerk (Alte Kirche) ist das \u00e4lteste Geb\u00e4ude Amsterdams und steht im Herzen der mittelalterlichen Innenstadt, im Viertel De Wallen. Schon um 1250 stand hier eine h\u00f6lzerne Kapelle, und am 17. September 1306 weihte der Bischof von Utrecht die Kirche dem heiligen Nikolaus, dem Schutzpatron der Seeleute. Als 1409 die Nieuwe Kerk am Dam geweiht wurde, nannte man die Sint Nicolaaskerk fortan die Alte Kirche. In den folgenden Jahrhunderten wuchs sie zu einer gro\u00dfen gotischen Hallenkirche, die um 1570 vollendet war.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The church lost most of its Catholic art in the iconoclasm of 1566 and the Alteration of 1578, when Amsterdam turned Protestant, which explains its sober interior; only the paintings on the ceiling, out of reach, survived. That ceiling is the largest medieval wooden vault in Europe. The floor is made up of about 2,500 gravestones over the graves of some 60,000 people, among them Rembrandt’s wife Saskia van Uylenburgh and the naval hero Jacob van Heemskerck. Look out for the stained-glass windows of the Lady Chapel, added in 1552, and the Vater-M\u00fcller organ of 1724, one of the finest Baroque organs in Europe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since 2012 the Oude Kerk has also been a venue for contemporary art: artists create new works for the building, shown in the main church alongside side chapels with historical displays. Protestant services are still held on Sunday mornings, and the church hosts concerts and events. It is open Monday to Saturday from 10:00 to 18:00 and on Sunday from 13:00 to 17:30, and closes on King’s Day (27 April), Christmas Day and while exhibitions are being installed. It is usually quietest before noon and on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tickets cost \u20ac14.50 for adults and \u20ac7.50 for students and ages 13\u201317; children up to 12 go free, as do holders of the Museumkaart and the I amsterdam City Card. Admission includes a free audio tour in six languages, including English. From late April to the end of October, guided tours climb the tower from Wednesday to Sunday (combined ticket \u20ac22, not for children under 6). Payment is cashless only.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The church stands on Oudekerksplein, between Warmoesstraat and Oudezijds Voorburgwal, about eight minutes’ walk from Amsterdam Centraal Station. Trams 4, 14 and 24 stop at Dam, trams 2, 12, 13 and 17 at Nieuwezijds Kolk, and metros 51, 53 and 54 at Nieuwmarkt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
