Kronborg stands on a headland at the north-eastern tip of Zealand, in the town of Helsing\u00f8r (Elsinore), where the \u00d8resund between Denmark and Sweden is only about 4 kilometres wide. It is an easy day trip from Copenhagen: Coastal Line trains (Kystbanen) run from Copenhagen Central Station to Helsing\u00f8r about every 20 minutes, also stopping at N\u00f8rreport and \u00d8sterport, and take around 46 minutes. From Helsing\u00f8r station it is a 10-minute walk along the harbour to the castle. By car the drive takes 45\u201350 minutes on the E47, and there is public parking on Nordhavnsvej, five minutes’ walk north of the castle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Geschichte und literarischer Ruhm<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

In the 1420s King Eric of Pomerania built a fortress called Krogen here to collect the Sound Dues, the toll paid by every ship sailing between the North Sea and the Baltic. Between 1574 and 1585 King Frederik II turned it into a magnificent Renaissance castle, designed by the Flemish architects Hans Hendrik van Paesschen and Anthonis van Obbergen. After a fire in 1629 Christian IV rebuilt it, but in 1658 the Swedes captured the castle and carried off many of its treasures. Kronborg is the Elsinore of Shakespeare’s Hamlet, and the play has been staged at the castle since 1816. Highlights include the long ballroom, tapestries of Danish kings commissioned by Frederik II, the castle chapel and the dark casemates, where the statue of the sleeping Holger the Dane is said to wake if Denmark is ever in danger. Kronborg has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tickets und praktische Informationen<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

A day ticket costs 150 DKK for adults, or 135 DKK online, and children enter free. It covers the castle and all current exhibitions, including the casemates. From late March to the end of October the castle is open daily from 10:00 to 17:00; in winter and from November it opens from Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00 to 16:00, with longer weekend hours in the Christmas season, and it is closed on 24, 25 and 31 December. Free 15-minute introductory tours run several times a day, while guided tours in English, such as In Hamlet’s Footsteps, need registration. Allow at least two hours for the visit. The ticket office is in the yellow house after the first moat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
