The Monastery of Montserrat is one of the great spiritual and scenic destinations of Catalonia \u2014 a Benedictine abbey perched dramatically on a shelf of the extraordinary Montserrat massif, a mountain of pink conglomerate rock eroded into rounded, finger-like peaks that give it its name, meaning \u201cserrated mountain.\u201d Set about 720 metres up and some 45 kilometres north-west of Barcelona, the monastery has been a centre of pilgrimage for nearly a thousand years, founded in the 11th century and home today to a community of Benedictine monks. It is a place where a revered shrine, a famous work of art, an ancient musical tradition and a spectacular natural setting all come together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the heart of the sanctuary, in the basilica, is La Moreneta \u2014 the \u201cLittle Dark One\u201d \u2014 a 12th-century Romanesque carving of the Virgin and Child with a dark-toned face, the Black Madonna who is the patron saint of Catalonia; pilgrims queue to touch the orb she holds. Each day, weather and term permitting, the basilica also fills with the pure voices of the Escolania, one of the oldest boys’ choirs in Europe, whose roots reach back to the 13th century. Beyond the church, the monastery complex includes a fine art museum, with works ranging from archaeology to Caravaggio, El Greco, Picasso and Dal\u00ed, and there is much to explore on the mountain itself: funiculars climb to the hermitage of Sant Joan and down to the Santa Cova (Holy Grotto), and marked trails lead out among the rock pinnacles to viewpoints over Catalonia, on a clear day as far as the Pyrenees and the sea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Montserrat lies in the municipality of Monistrol de Montserrat, about an hour from Barcelona and easily visited as a day trip. The classic approach is by train from Barcelona to the foot of the mountain, then up to the monastery either by the Aeri de Montserrat cable car or by the Cremallera rack railway; drivers can take the winding mountain road to car parks near the top. Combined tickets, such as the \u201cTot Montserrat\u201d pass, bundle the transport, funiculars, museum and a meal. Entry to the basilica is free (though queues to see the Madonna can be long, and the choir sings only at set times), while the museum and the funiculars are ticketed. Allow at least half a day, wear comfortable shoes for the slopes and steps, bring a layer as it can be cooler and windier up high, and check the times for the Escolania if you hope to hear them sing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
