The Church of S\u00e3o Francisco (Igreja de S\u00e3o Francisco) is one of the most surprising churches in Porto, in the north of Portugal. It stands near the Douro River, close to the Ribeira district. The church was built by Franciscan monks in the 14th and 15th centuries in the Gothic style, and from the outside it looks quite simple. But inside, almost every surface is covered with carved wood painted with gold. This rich decoration was added mainly in the 17th and 18th centuries, in the Baroque style. Today the church is no longer used for regular services and is open to visitors as a monument and museum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Das goldene Interieur ist das Highlight. W\u00e4nde, S\u00e4ulen, Alt\u00e4re und Decken sind mit geschnitztem und vergoldetem Holz verziert, das Engel, Blumen, Bl\u00e4tter und Figuren darstellt. Eines der ber\u00fchmtesten Werke ist der Jess\u00e9-Baum, ein gro\u00dfes geschnitztes Altarbild, das den Stammbaum Jesu zeigt. Unter der Kirche befinden sich die Katakomben, in denen M\u00f6nche und wohlhabende Familien beigesetzt wurden. Hier kann man alte Gr\u00e4ber und ein Beinhaus besichtigen, einen Raum, in dem menschliche Gebeine aufbewahrt werden. Auf der gegen\u00fcberliegenden Stra\u00dfenseite befindet sich das Besucherzentrum mit einem kleinen Museum, das religi\u00f6se Kunst und M\u00f6bel zeigt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The church is on Rua do Infante Dom Henrique, near the Ribeira waterfront and the Stock Exchange Palace (Pal\u00e1cio da Bolsa). It is easy to reach on foot from the centre of Porto. There is an entrance fee, which includes the church, the catacombs and the museum. Taking photos inside the church is usually not allowed. Allow about one hour for the visit. It is easy to combine with a walk along the Ribeira riverside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
