The Basler Herbstmesse (Basel Autumn Fair) is the largest and oldest funfair in Switzerland \u2014 a much-loved tradition that has been held in Basel since 1471, when the city was granted the right to stage the fair by Emperor Frederick III. For just over two weeks each autumn, squares and open spaces across the city fill with hundreds of fairground rides, market stalls, sideshows and food stands, from historic carousels to towering modern roller coasters and big wheels. It is a highlight of the Basel year, opening with the ringing of the Martinskirche bells, and combines old-fashioned fairground charm with the buzz of a big-city celebration. In 2026 the Herbstmesse runs from 24 October to 8 November.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The fair is spread across seven locations around the city \u2014 among them M\u00fcnsterplatz, Barf\u00fcsserplatz, Petersplatz, the Kasernenareal and the Messeplatz \u2014 each with its own character, so exploring them all is part of the fun. Expect white-knuckle rides and gentle children’s carousels, shooting galleries and games of chance, and a giant Ferris wheel giving views over the old town and the Rhine. Traditional treats are everywhere: roasted chestnuts, Rosenk\u00fcchli pastries, gingerbread and m\u00e4ssmogge sweets, alongside plenty of hearty food and drink. On the Petersplatz, the H\u00e4felim\u00e4\u00e4rt market sells ceramics and household goods in a centuries-old custom, while the whole fair takes on a magical glow after dark.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Basel sits in the north-west corner of Switzerland, where it meets France and Germany, and is easily reached by train and by its own EuroAirport; the fair’s various sites are all in and around the city centre, well served by trams and best reached on foot or by public transport rather than car. In 2026 the Basler Herbstmesse runs from 24 October to 8 November (with the H\u00e4felim\u00e4\u00e4rt market continuing a couple of days longer). Entry to all the fairground sites is free \u2014 you simply pay for the rides, games and food you choose \u2014 and the fair runs from around midday until late each day. It is at its busiest and liveliest in the evenings and at weekends, and autumn in Basel can be cold, so wrap up warm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
