The Roman Aqueduct of Segovia is one of the best preserved Roman monuments in Spain. It stands in the city of Segovia, in the region of Castile and Le\u00f3n. The aqueduct was built by the Romans, probably in the 1st or 2nd century AD, to carry water into the city from the mountains. It is made of large granite blocks placed on top of each other without any cement or mortar. At its tallest point, in the main square called Plaza del Azoguejo, it rises about 28 metres on two rows of arches. It is the symbol of Segovia and part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The aqueduct is free to see and stands right in the heart of the city. The most impressive part is in the Plaza del Azoguejo, where it rises high overhead on its double row of arches. Steps and viewpoints beside it let you look at the huge stone blocks up close and see the whole structure from different angles. From here it is a short walk up into Segovia’s old town, which is also full of history. Other famous sights nearby include the Gothic cathedral and the fairy-tale Alc\u00e1zar castle, so the aqueduct is usually the start of a wider visit to the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Segovia is about 90 kilometres north-west of Madrid. It is very easy to reach by high-speed train, which takes under half an hour from the capital, as well as by bus. The aqueduct is a short walk or bus ride from the station and stands at the entrance to the old town. It is free to see at any time of day, and it looks especially beautiful when it is lit up at night. Allow a few hours to enjoy the aqueduct together with the rest of Segovia’s old town, cathedral and castle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
