Castel Nuovo, also called the Maschio Angioino, is one of the symbols of Naples, in the south of Italy. It stands near the port, in the centre of the city. The castle was first built at the end of the 13th century by Charles I of Anjou, the king of Naples, and it became the home of the kings. In the 15th century the new Aragonese rulers rebuilt it with five large round towers. Its name means \u201cNew Castle\u201d, because it was newer than the older castles of the city. Today it houses a civic museum and the meeting hall of the city council.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The most famous feature is the white marble Triumphal Arch at the entrance, between two towers. It was built to celebrate King Alfonso of Aragon and is decorated with fine Renaissance sculptures. Inside you can visit the Barons’ Hall, a huge room with a star-shaped stone ceiling, and the Palatine Chapel. The Civic Museum shows paintings and sculptures from the Middle Ages to the 19th century. In one hall, a glass floor lets you see Roman and medieval remains under the castle. From the towers and walls there are views over the port and the bay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

El castillo se encuentra en la Piazza Municipio, en el centro de N\u00e1poles, cerca del puerto. La estaci\u00f3n de metro m\u00e1s cercana es Municipio, y la Piazza del Plebiscito est\u00e1 a pocos pasos. La entrada es de pago y el castillo cierra algunos d\u00edas, as\u00ed que conviene consultar los d\u00edas de apertura antes de ir. Desde el puerto, justo al lado del castillo, salen ferris a Capri, Ischia y Sorrento, por lo que es f\u00e1cil visitarlo antes o despu\u00e9s de un paseo en barco.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
