Grand-Place, known as Grote Markt in Dutch, is the historic central square of Brussels, Belgium\u2019s capital city. It has served as the social and commercial heart of Brussels for centuries, surrounded by ornately decorated guild houses, the striking Town Hall, and the Maison du Roi (King\u2019s House), which now hosts the City Museum. The square\u2019s architectural ensemble reflects different styles ranging from Gothic to Baroque, making it one of Europe\u2019s most visually impressive urban spaces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The origins of Grand-Place trace back to the Middle Ages, when the area functioned as a bustling marketplace where local traders and townspeople gathered. Over time, it grew in importance as a civic center, with the construction of monumental buildings that demonstrated the wealth and influence of Brussels\u2019 guilds. In 1695, during the Nine Years\u2019 War, French troops bombarded the city and destroyed most of the square; the Gothic Town Hall survived, and the guilds rebuilt their houses within a few years in a style that preserved the square\u2019s historic character.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tout au long de sa longue histoire, la Grand-Place a \u00e9t\u00e9 le th\u00e9\u00e2tre d'\u00e9v\u00e9nements importants, de c\u00e9l\u00e9brations et de comm\u00e9morations, et elle reste un lieu incontournable pour les habitants et les visiteurs. Son sol pav\u00e9 et son am\u00e9nagement pi\u00e9tonnier invitent \u00e0 la d\u00e9couverte, tandis que divers caf\u00e9s, restaurants et chocolateries occupent les rez-de-chauss\u00e9e des maisons de corporations, offrant un aper\u00e7u de la culture et de la cuisine belges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Depuis 1998, la Grand-Place est inscrite au patrimoine mondial de l\u2019UNESCO pour son harmonie architecturale, sa valeur historique et son atmosph\u00e8re vivante. Tous les deux ans, vers le 15 ao\u00fbt, elle se couvre du Tapis de fleurs, compos\u00e9 de centaines de milliers de b\u00e9gonias et de dahlias ; le prochain aura lieu en 2028. D\u00e9but juillet, le cort\u00e8ge historique de l\u2019Ommegang envahit la place, et en hiver un sapin de No\u00ebl et un spectacle son et lumi\u00e8re en soir\u00e9e attirent les foules.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
