The Prejmer Fortified Church is located in the village of Prejmer, about 15 km northeast of Bra\u0219ov in the historical region of Transylvania. The church was originally built in the 13th century by the Teutonic Order, and later expanded by the Transylvanian Saxon community. Due to its outstanding preservation and historical importance, it was added in 1999 to the UNESCO World Heritage Site \u201cVillages with Fortified Churches in Transylvania\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Prejmer is considered the largest fortified church in Southeast Europe, designed to protect the local population during frequent invasions. The complex is surrounded by massive defensive walls 12\u201314 meters high and 3\u20134 meters thick, forming a circular fortress. Inside these walls are about 270 storage rooms and living chambers, arranged on four levels, where villagers could shelter during sieges along with their supplies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Visiter Prejmer<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

L'\u00e9glise centrale, de style gothique, pr\u00e9sente une structure simple mais imposante, \u00e9voquant une forteresse. \u00c0 l'int\u00e9rieur, les visiteurs peuvent admirer des \u00e9l\u00e9ments tels que l'autel, des galeries en bois et des vestiges de d\u00e9coration m\u00e9di\u00e9vale. La cour qui l'entoure donne acc\u00e8s aux nombreuses petites chambres am\u00e9nag\u00e9es dans les murs de la forteresse, qui servaient de refuge temporaire aux familles lors des attaques, notamment pour entreposer leurs biens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

L'un des aspects les plus remarquables de Prejmer est son syst\u00e8me d\u00e9fensif, comprenant d'\u00e9troits couloirs, des escaliers dissimul\u00e9s et une porte fortifi\u00e9e dot\u00e9e de m\u00e9canismes de protection. Ces \u00e9l\u00e9ments illustrent comment le complexe servait \u00e0 la fois de lieu de culte et de refuge pour toute la communaut\u00e9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The site is easily accessible from Bra\u0219ov, with a travel time of about 20\u201325 minutes by car. Public buses also run regularly between Bra\u0219ov and Prejmer, making it convenient for visitors without a car. The church is located in the center of the village and can be reached on foot from local bus stops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2026 a ticket costs 20 lei for adults (about \u20ac4) and 10 lei for pupils and students. From 1 April to 15 October the church is open Monday to Saturday from 9:00 and on Sunday from 11:00, with last entry at 17:30; from 16 October to 31 March it is open 9:00\u201316:00. A typical visit lasts about 1\u20132 hours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
