The Biertan Fortified Church is located in the village of Biertan, in the historic region of Transylvania. The village lies about 80 km by road north-east of Sibiu and approximately 30 km east of Media\u0219. Biertan developed as a settlement of the Transylvanian Saxons, a German-speaking population invited to the region in the Middle Ages to develop trade and agriculture. Because of frequent Ottoman and Tatar invasions during the medieval period, local communities built fortified churches that served both as religious centers and defensive structures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The church in Biertan was constructed mainly between 1490 and 1524 in the Late Gothic style and later surrounded by a complex system of defensive walls and towers. Due to its historical importance and excellent preservation, Biertan was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1993; in 1999 the site was extended to six more villages as \u201cVillages with Fortified Churches in Transylvania\u201d. From 1572 to 1867 Biertan was the seat of the Lutheran Evangelical Bishop of Transylvania, making it one of the most important religious centers of the Saxon community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ce m\u00e9canisme est consid\u00e9r\u00e9 comme l'une des serrures m\u00e9di\u00e9vales les plus complexes d'Europe et a re\u00e7u un prix lors de l'exposition universelle de Paris en 1900.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Inside the church visitors can see richly decorated late Gothic altars, wooden pews, and painted panels created by local craftsmen. Another unusual feature of the complex is the so-called \u201cmarital prison\u201d, a small room where couples experiencing marital conflicts were once locked together temporarily by the local priest in order to reconcile. According to local tradition, this practice significantly reduced divorce cases in the village.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Travelers usually reach Biertan by car from Sighi\u0219oara (about 30 km, 40 minutes) or Sibiu (about 1.5 hours). The roads pass through the scenic countryside of Transylvania, with rolling hills and traditional Saxon villages. Public buses also connect nearby towns such as Media\u0219 and Sighi\u0219oara with Biertan, although services are limited. Once in the village, visitors can easily walk to the fortified church, which dominates the skyline and can be seen from almost every part of Biertan. Entry costs about 15 lei; from April to October the church is open daily, usually from 10:00 with a lunch break from 13:00 to 14:00, while in winter it opens only from Tuesday to Sunday, 11:00\u201315:00.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
