Delphes, sur les pentes du Parnasse au-dessus de la vall\u00e9e du Pleistos, \u00e9tait le plus important sanctuaire de la Gr\u00e8ce antique et le si\u00e8ge de l\u2019oracle d\u2019Apollon, dont la pr\u00eatresse, la Pythie, rendait des proph\u00e9ties aux cit\u00e9s et aux rois. Les Grecs y voyaient le centre du monde, marqu\u00e9 par une pierre appel\u00e9e omphalos, ou nombril. Le site est inscrit au patrimoine mondial de l\u2019UNESCO depuis 1987.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Sacred Way climbs past the treasuries that cities built for their offerings, including the restored Treasury of the Athenians, to the Temple of Apollo, whose ruins date from a rebuilding in the 4th century BC. Above it are the theatre, which held about 4,500 spectators, and the stadium, with a track 177 metres long. About 800 metres away, below the road, lies the Sanctuary of Athena Pronaia with the circular Tholos, built around 380\u2013360 BC. The museum next to the site displays the bronze Charioteer of Delphi, made around 470 BC to celebrate a chariot victory at the Pythian Games, together with the omphalos and sculptures from the treasuries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One ticket covers the archaeological site and the museum: \u20ac20, reduced \u20ac10, with timed entry when booked online at the official Hellenic Heritage ticket store. From 1 April to 31 October opening hours are 08:00\u201320:00 (the museum opens 10:00\u201317:00 on Tuesdays), and from 1 November to 31 March 08:30\u201315:30; last entry is 20 minutes before closing. Delphi is closed on 1 January, 25 March, 1 May, Easter Sunday and 25\u201326 December. Entry is free on 6 March, 18 April, 18 May, the last weekend of September, 28 October, and the first and third Sundays of each month from November to March.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Le sanctuaire est en pente raide et peu ombrag\u00e9 : emportez de l\u2019eau et de bonnes chaussures et, en \u00e9t\u00e9, venez t\u00f4t ou en fin d\u2019apr\u00e8s-midi. Comptez environ deux heures pour le site et une heure pour le mus\u00e9e.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Delphes est \u00e0 environ 180 km au nord-ouest d\u2019Ath\u00e8nes, soit trois heures de voiture environ, et les bus KTEL au d\u00e9part d\u2019Ath\u00e8nes desservent le village moderne de Delphes, \u00e0 une dizaine de minutes \u00e0 pied du site. Les excursions d\u2019une journ\u00e9e depuis Ath\u00e8nes sont tr\u00e8s pris\u00e9es, mais passer la nuit \u00e0 Delphes ou dans la proche Arachova permet de visiter aux heures les plus calmes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
