The Parque del Buen Retiro is Madrid’s great central park. It was laid out in the 1630s as the garden of the Buen Retiro Palace, a royal retreat built for Philip IV, and became a public park in 1868. Today it covers about 125 hectares with more than 15,000 trees, and since 2021 it has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Paseo del Prado and Buen Retiro, a Landscape of Arts and Sciences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Great Pond, where you can hire a rowing boat, is overlooked by the Monument to Alfonso XII, whose colonnade has had a viewing platform since 2018. The Crystal Palace, built of glass and iron in 1887 for an exhibition on the Philippines, and the Vel\u00e1zquez Palace host exhibitions of the Reina Sof\u00eda Museum. Look out for the Rosaleda rose garden, the Fallen Angel statue, said to be the only public monument to the devil, the Gal\u00e1pagos Fountain, the puppet theatre and a Montezuma cypress in the Parterre that is almost 400 years old.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

L\u2019entr\u00e9e du parc est libre et il est ouvert tous les jours, de 6h00 \u00e0 minuit d\u2019avril \u00e0 septembre et de 6h00 \u00e0 22h00 d\u2019octobre \u00e0 mars. La location de barques sur le Grand \u00c9tang est payante, et le parc peut fermer en cas d\u2019intemp\u00e9ries, orages ou vents violents. Chaque ann\u00e9e, fin mai et en juin, il accueille la Foire du livre de Madrid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The main entrance, the Puerta de la Independencia, is on Plaza de la Independencia next to the Puerta de Alcal\u00e1. The nearest metro stations are Retiro (L2), Ibiza (L9), Atocha and Estaci\u00f3n del Arte (L1), and Madrid-Atocha station is a short walk from the southern gates. The Prado and the Royal Botanic Garden are just west of the park.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
