La ceinture des canaux (Grachtengordel) est le c\u0153ur d'Amsterdam au XVIIe si\u00e8cle : un croissant de canaux autour du centre m\u00e9di\u00e9val, con\u00e7u quand la ville \u00e9tait en plein essor pendant le Si\u00e8cle d'or n\u00e9erlandais. Les travaux des trois canaux principaux, le Herengracht, le Keizersgracht et le Prinsengracht, commenc\u00e8rent \u00e0 l'ouest en 1613, et \u00e0 partir de 1660 environ ils furent prolong\u00e9s vers l'Amstel. C\u00f4t\u00e9 int\u00e9rieur se trouve le Singel, l'ancien foss\u00e9 de la ville, et tout le quartier est entour\u00e9 par le Singelgracht. L'UNESCO, qui a inscrit la zone en 2010, la consid\u00e8re comme l'extension urbaine la plus vaste et la plus homog\u00e8ne de son temps et un mod\u00e8le d'urbanisme jusqu'au XIXe si\u00e8cle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Amsterdam has more than 100 kilometres of canals, about 90 islands and some 1,500 bridges. The main canals are lined with around 1,550 listed buildings, from narrow merchants’ houses with step, neck and bell gables to the grand mansions of the Golden Bend on the Herengracht. The Anne Frank House on the Prinsengracht and Museum Van Loon on the Keizersgracht show life behind the canal-house facades, and the Nine Streets between the canals are full of small shops and caf\u00e9s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The canal district is free to explore on foot or by bike at any time; watch out for cyclists on the narrow canal-side streets. The classic way to see it is from the water: canal cruises of one to one and a half hours leave from Centraal Station, the Damrak, the Rokin and the Stadhouderskade near the Rijksmuseum, and cost roughly \u20ac16\u201328 for adults depending on the operator and online deals. Evening cruises show the illuminated bridges, and small open boats and electric rental boats are an alternative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Singel begins a few minutes’ walk from Amsterdam Centraal Station, and trams cross the canal ring along the Raadhuisstraat, Leidsestraat and Vijzelstraat. Spring and the long summer evenings are the most popular times, but the canals are atmospheric all year: in early August boats fill the Prinsengracht for the Canal Parade of Pride Amsterdam, and in winter the Amsterdam Light Festival lights up the water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
