The Royal Site of San Lorenzo de El Escorial is one of the most imposing monuments in Spain \u2014 a vast, austere complex of grey granite set against the Sierra de Guadarrama, about 45 kilometres north-west of Madrid. It was built between 1563 and 1584 for King Philip II, the most powerful ruler in the Europe of his day, as a monastery, royal palace, basilica, mausoleum and library all in one, in the sober, geometric \u201cHerreran\u201d style named after its architect, Juan de Herrera. Conceived partly as a memorial to Philip’s father, Emperor Charles V, and to Spain’s Catholic mission, it became the spiritual and political heart of the Spanish empire, and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1984.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Behind its severe fa\u00e7ades lies a surprising wealth of art and treasure. At the centre stands the great domed basilica, modelled in part on St Peter’s in Rome, while beneath it the Royal Pantheon \u2014 a sumptuous chamber of black marble and gilt bronze \u2014 holds the tombs of almost all the kings of Spain since Charles V. The Habsburg palace apartments, plain in Philip II’s own rooms and richer under later monarchs, include a hall lined with painted battle scenes, and the walls throughout are hung with masterpieces by Titian, El Greco, Vel\u00e1zquez and Bosch, gathered in the picture galleries and chapter houses. The barrel-vaulted Library, its ceiling frescoed with the liberal arts, is one of the most beautiful in the world and holds thousands of rare manuscripts. Outside, formal gardens and the surrounding hills offer air and space after the solemnity within.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

El Escorial lies in the town of San Lorenzo de El Escorial, about 45 kilometres north-west of Madrid and an easy day trip from the capital: regional (Cercan\u00edas) trains and buses run there in around an hour, and from the station it is a short walk or bus ride up to the monastery. The complex is managed by Patrimonio Nacional and is ticketed, with reduced rates and some free-admission times (typically certain afternoons), though these require advance booking; it is open Tuesday to Sunday and closed on Mondays. Allow at least a couple of hours for the basilica, pantheon, palace and library, wear comfortable shoes, and consider combining a visit with the mountain scenery of the Guadarrama nearby.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
