Lake Sant Maurici (Estany de Sant Maurici) is a beautiful mountain lake in the Pyrenees, in Catalonia, in the north-east of Spain. It lies at about 1,900 metres above sea level and is surrounded by pine forests and high granite peaks. The lake gives its name to the Aig\u00fcestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici National Park, the only national park in Catalonia, created in 1955. The park has more than 200 lakes, as well as streams, waterfalls and meadows. It is one of the best places in Spain for walking in the mountains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The most famous view is of Els Encantats, two tall rocky peaks that rise above the lake. Their name means \u201cthe enchanted ones\u201d, and they are the symbol of the park. An easy path goes around the lake and gives beautiful views of the water and the mountains. From the lake, longer walking trails lead to other lakes and high mountain passes, such as the path to the Ratera lake and waterfall. In summer the meadows are full of flowers, and in autumn the forests turn golden. You may see animals such as chamois, marmots and many birds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The lake is reached from the village of Espot, in the province of Lleida, about four hours by car from Barcelona. Private cars are not allowed on the last part of the road into the park. You can walk up from Espot, or take one of the 4×4 taxis that run from the village to the lake. Entry to the national park is free, but you pay for the taxi. The weather in the mountains can change quickly, so bring warm and waterproof clothes, good walking shoes, water and food. The best time to visit is from late spring to autumn, as there is often snow in winter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
