The Dom Lu\u00eds I Bridge (Ponte Dom Lu\u00eds I) is the symbol of Porto, the second largest city in Portugal. It crosses the Douro River and connects Porto with the town of Vila Nova de Gaia on the other side. The bridge was opened in 1886 and named after King Lu\u00eds I. It was designed by the engineer Th\u00e9ophile Seyrig, who had worked with Gustave Eiffel. The bridge is made of iron and has two levels, or decks. When it was built, its great arch was the longest of its kind in the world. Today it is part of the Historic Centre of Porto, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Le mieux est de traverser le pont \u00e0 pied. Le tablier sup\u00e9rieur, situ\u00e9 \u00e0 environ 45 m\u00e8tres au-dessus du fleuve, est emprunt\u00e9 par le m\u00e9tro et les pi\u00e9tons. De l\u00e0, on jouit d\u2019une vue imprenable sur les maisons color\u00e9es du quartier de la Ribeira, sur le fleuve avec ses bateaux traditionnels et sur les caves \u00e0 vin de Porto de Vila Nova de Gaia. Le tablier inf\u00e9rieur est proche de l'eau et relie les quais de la Ribeira \u00e0 ceux de Gaia. Du c\u00f4t\u00e9 de Gaia, pr\u00e8s du tablier sup\u00e9rieur, vous pouvez visiter le belv\u00e9d\u00e8re de la Serra do Pilar ou prendre un t\u00e9l\u00e9ph\u00e9rique pour descendre jusqu'au fleuve. The bridge is in the centre of Porto, a short walk from the cathedral and the Ribeira district. The upper deck can be reached on foot or by metro (line D, stations S\u00e3o Bento and Jardim do Morro). The lower deck is reached from the Ribeira waterfront. Walking across the bridge is free and possible at any time. On the upper deck, people walk next to the metro tracks, so stay on the walkway and be careful. It is a good idea to cross on the upper deck and return along the river on the lower deck.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
