The Church of S\u00e3o Francisco (Igreja de S\u00e3o Francisco) is one of the most surprising churches in Porto, in the north of Portugal. It stands near the Douro River, close to the Ribeira district. The church was built by Franciscan monks in the 14th and 15th centuries in the Gothic style, and from the outside it looks quite simple. But inside, almost every surface is covered with carved wood painted with gold. This rich decoration was added mainly in the 17th and 18th centuries, in the Baroque style. Today the church is no longer used for regular services and is open to visitors as a monument and museum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

L'int\u00e9rieur dor\u00e9 est le clou de la visite. Les murs, les colonnes, les autels et les plafonds sont recouverts de bois sculpt\u00e9 et dor\u00e9 repr\u00e9sentant des anges, des fleurs, des feuilles et des personnages. L'une des \u0153uvres les plus c\u00e9l\u00e8bres est l'Arbre de Jess\u00e9, un grand retable sculpt\u00e9 qui repr\u00e9sente l'arbre g\u00e9n\u00e9alogique de J\u00e9sus. Sous l'\u00e9glise se trouvent les catacombes, o\u00f9 \u00e9taient enterr\u00e9s les moines et les familles ais\u00e9es. On peut y voir d'anciennes tombes ainsi qu'un ossuaire, une salle o\u00f9 sont conserv\u00e9s des ossements humains. De l'autre c\u00f4t\u00e9 de la rue, le centre d'accueil des visiteurs abrite un petit mus\u00e9e pr\u00e9sentant des \u0153uvres d'art religieux et du mobilier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The church is on Rua do Infante Dom Henrique, near the Ribeira waterfront and the Stock Exchange Palace (Pal\u00e1cio da Bolsa). It is easy to reach on foot from the centre of Porto. There is an entrance fee, which includes the church, the catacombs and the museum. Taking photos inside the church is usually not allowed. Allow about one hour for the visit. It is easy to combine with a walk along the Ribeira riverside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
