Castel dell’Ovo is the oldest castle in Naples, in the south of Italy. It stands on the small island of Megaride, joined to the land by a short stone bridge, at the end of the city’s seaside promenade. The ancient Greeks first settled on this island, and later a rich Roman built a villa here. The castle we see today was built and rebuilt many times from the 12th century. Its name means \u201cEgg Castle\u201d. According to a legend, the Roman poet Virgil hid a magic egg in its walls, and if the egg breaks, disaster will come to Naples.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can walk up inside the castle to its terraces, which give beautiful views of the Bay of Naples, Mount Vesuvius and the city. Next to the castle is the Borgo Marinari, a small harbour with fishing boats, yachts and seafood restaurants. The seaside promenade, called the Lungomare, runs from the castle along Via Partenope and Via Caracciolo. It is closed to cars and is very popular for walks, especially at sunset. Along the way there are caf\u00e9s, small beaches and rocks where local people swim in summer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Le ch\u00e2teau se trouve sur le front de mer de Naples, \u00e0 environ 10 minutes \u00e0 pied de la Piazza del Plebiscito. Plusieurs lignes de bus longent le front de mer. L'acc\u00e8s \u00e0 la cour et aux terrasses du ch\u00e2teau est g\u00e9n\u00e9ralement gratuit. Certaines parties du ch\u00e2teau sont parfois ferm\u00e9es en raison d'\u00e9v\u00e9nements ou de travaux de restauration ; pensez donc \u00e0 vous renseigner avant de vous y rendre. La promenade est gratuite et accessible \u00e0 toute heure. Elle est particuli\u00e8rement belle le soir, lorsque les lumi\u00e8res de la baie et du V\u00e9suve sont illumin\u00e9es par le soleil couchant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
