Castel Nuovo, also called the Maschio Angioino, is one of the symbols of Naples, in the south of Italy. It stands near the port, in the centre of the city. The castle was first built at the end of the 13th century by Charles I of Anjou, the king of Naples, and it became the home of the kings. In the 15th century the new Aragonese rulers rebuilt it with five large round towers. Its name means \u201cNew Castle\u201d, because it was newer than the older castles of the city. Today it houses a civic museum and the meeting hall of the city council.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The most famous feature is the white marble Triumphal Arch at the entrance, between two towers. It was built to celebrate King Alfonso of Aragon and is decorated with fine Renaissance sculptures. Inside you can visit the Barons’ Hall, a huge room with a star-shaped stone ceiling, and the Palatine Chapel. The Civic Museum shows paintings and sculptures from the Middle Ages to the 19th century. In one hall, a glass floor lets you see Roman and medieval remains under the castle. From the towers and walls there are views over the port and the bay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Le ch\u00e2teau se trouve sur la Piazza Municipio, en plein c\u0153ur de Naples, pr\u00e8s du port. La station de m\u00e9tro la plus proche est Municipio, et la Piazza del Plebiscito est accessible \u00e0 pied en quelques minutes. L'entr\u00e9e est payante et le ch\u00e2teau est ferm\u00e9 certains jours\u00a0; pensez donc \u00e0 v\u00e9rifier les jours d'ouverture avant votre visite. Les ferries pour Capri, Ischia et Sorrente partent du port, juste \u00e0 c\u00f4t\u00e9 du ch\u00e2teau\u00a0; il est donc facile de le visiter avant ou apr\u00e8s une excursion en bateau.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
