The Prejmer Fortified Church is located in the village of Prejmer, about 15 km northeast of Bra\u0219ov in the historical region of Transylvania. The church was originally built in the 13th century by the Teutonic Order, and later expanded by the Transylvanian Saxon community. Due to its outstanding preservation and historical importance, it was added in 1999 to the UNESCO World Heritage Site \u201cVillages with Fortified Churches in Transylvania\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Prejmer is considered the largest fortified church in Southeast Europe, designed to protect the local population during frequent invasions. The complex is surrounded by massive defensive walls 12\u201314 meters high and 3\u20134 meters thick, forming a circular fortress. Inside these walls are about 270 storage rooms and living chambers, arranged on four levels, where villagers could shelter during sieges along with their supplies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

La chiesa centrale \u00e8 costruita in stile gotico e presenta una struttura semplice ma imponente, dall'aspetto fortificato. All'interno si possono ammirare elementi come l'altare, le gallerie in legno e tracce di decorazioni medievali. Il cortile circostante permette di accedere alle numerose piccole camere costruite nelle mura della fortezza, che venivano utilizzate dalle singole famiglie come deposito e abitazione temporanea durante gli attacchi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Una delle caratteristiche pi\u00f9 notevoli di Prejmer \u00e8 il suo sistema difensivo, che comprende corridoi stretti, scale nascoste e una porta fortificata con meccanismi di protezione. Questi elementi illustrano come il complesso funzionasse sia come luogo di culto che come rifugio difensivo per l'intera comunit\u00e0.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The site is easily accessible from Bra\u0219ov, with a travel time of about 20\u201325 minutes by car. Public buses also run regularly between Bra\u0219ov and Prejmer, making it convenient for visitors without a car. The church is located in the center of the village and can be reached on foot from local bus stops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2026 a ticket costs 20 lei for adults (about \u20ac4) and 10 lei for pupils and students. From 1 April to 15 October the church is open Monday to Saturday from 9:00 and on Sunday from 11:00, with last entry at 17:30; from 16 October to 31 March it is open 9:00\u201316:00. A typical visit lasts about 1\u20132 hours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
