Centered in the capital, Funchal, the festival showcases the region’s rich floral diversity and mild climate. Originally created to celebrate the arrival of spring, it has evolved into a major cultural attraction, drawing visitors from across Europe and beyond.

The festival grew out of a rose show first held at the Ateneu Comercial do Funchal in 1954, which became the Festa da Flor a year later; since 1979 it has been organised by the regional tourism authority in its current form. It celebrates the arrival of spring and Madeira’s reputation as a “floating garden” with a mild climate and abundant flora. Each year, the event attracts tens of thousands of visitors, drawn by its famous floral carpets, exhibitions, and artistic installations. One of the highlights is the “Wall of Hope” (Muro da Esperança) ceremony, where children place flowers as a symbol of peace, as well as the grand allegorical parade featuring floats decorated entirely with fresh flowers and accompanied by music and dance.

One of the central events of the festival is the Grand Allegorical Flower Parade, featuring elaborately decorated floats covered in thousands of fresh flowers. Participants dressed in vibrant, floral-themed costumes dance through the streets, accompanied by music and choreographed performances. Another symbolic moment is the “Wall of Hope” ceremony, where children place flowers to promote peace and unity.

Prezzi e orari di apertura

Most outdoor events of the Madeira Flower Festival are free of charge, including street decorations, exhibitions, and public performances. Visitors can walk through the decorated streets and watch the parades from the pavements along Avenida do Mar without tickets. Grandstand seats for the parades are sold separately, at around €30 in 2026. Exhibitions and displays are open during the day, while performances, concerts, and entertainment often continue into the evening. The parades start in the afternoon (at 4:30 pm in 2026) and last a couple of hours.

La Festa dei fiori di Funchal in primavera: tappeti floreali, Muro della Speranza e cortei di carri;
