Canterbury Cathedral is one of the most important religious and historical sites in the United Kingdom. Located in the city of Canterbury in Kent, it is the mother church of the worldwide Anglican Communion and the seat of the Archbishop of Canterbury. Together with St Augustine\u2019s Abbey and St Martin\u2019s Church, the cathedral has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1988.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fondata nel 597 da sant\u2019Agostino, la cattedrale fu ricostruita dai Normanni negli anni Settanta dell\u2019XI secolo e ampliata nei secoli successivi, da cui la sua notevole combinazione di architettura romanica e gotica. \u00c8 famosa soprattutto per l\u2019assassinio dell\u2019arcivescovo Thomas Becket nel 1170, evento che fece della cattedrale una delle principali mete di pellegrinaggio dell\u2019Europa medievale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I visitatori possono esplorare il vasto interno: l\u2019alta navata in stile perpendicolare, il coro, la cripta normanna e il \u00abMartyrdom\u00bb, il punto in cui Becket fu ucciso. Nella Cappella della Trinit\u00e0 una sola candela segna il luogo dove sorgeva il suo reliquiario, distrutto nel 1538. L\u2019edificio \u00e8 rinomato per le vetrate, tra le pi\u00f9 antiche d\u2019Inghilterra, che raffigurano scene bibliche e i miracoli attribuiti a Becket. I tranquilli chiostri e giardini offrono uno spazio pi\u00f9 raccolto, lontano dalla chiesa principale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2026 an adult ticket costs \u00a318 from October to March, \u00a319.50 from April to September and \u00a321 at weekends in July and August. The ticket is valid for 12 months, and up to two children aged 17 and under enter free with each paying adult. The cathedral is open Monday to Saturday from 10:00 to 17:00 and on Sunday from 12:30 to 17:00, with last admission at 16:00. Booking online is recommended in peak season, and parts of the building may close for services or special events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Canterbury is easy to reach from London: high-speed trains from St Pancras International take about 55 minutes to Canterbury West, while trains from Victoria to Canterbury East take around an hour and a half. The cathedral is a 10\u201315 minute walk from either station through the historic city centre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
