The Zugspitze is the highest mountain in Germany, rising to 2,962 metres on the country’s southern border with Austria, at the western end of the Wetterstein range above Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Its summit \u2014 marked by a gleaming golden cross that has stood there since the 19th century \u2014 is one of the great Alpine viewpoints, taking in more than 400 peaks across four countries: Germany, Austria, Italy and Switzerland. Just below lies the Zugspitzplatt, a high sunlit plateau that holds one of Germany’s last few glaciers and the country’s highest ski slopes. Thanks to a remarkable set of mountain railways and cable cars, this rooftop of Germany is accessible to almost anyone, whatever the season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The summit itself is the attraction: broad viewing terraces look out over a sea of mountains, with the golden cross perched on the true peak \u2014 reached by a short scramble \u2014 and, on a clear day, a horizon that stretches from the Dolomites to the Swiss Alps. There are restaurants and a small museum on the history of the mountain, and you can even stroll across the frontier for a coffee on the Austrian side. Below the top, the Zugspitzplatt glacier plateau offers gentle walks in summer and skiing and tobogganing in winter, and is home to an environmental research station. Getting there is half the experience: from Lake Eibsee, the modern Eibsee cable car climbs to the summit in a single breathtaking span \u2014 when it opened it set world records for its height and its enormous support pillar \u2014 while the historic cog railway takes a slower, scenic route up through a long tunnel inside the mountain to the plateau, where a short glacier cable car completes the journey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

La Zugspitze \u00e8 raggiungibile da Garmisch-Partenkirchen, a circa 90 chilometri a sud-ovest di Monaco, collegata alla citt\u00e0 da treni regionali diretti. Dalla valle ci sono due percorsi classici per raggiungere la vetta, entrambi gestiti dalla Ferrovia Bavarese della Zugspitze: la ferrovia a cremagliera (Zugspitzbahn) da Garmisch passando per Grainau e il lago Eibsee, e la spettacolare funivia dell\u2019Eibsee che parte direttamente dal lago stesso; un itinerario molto popolare prevede la salita con una delle due e la discesa con l\u2019altra. Un biglietto giornaliero copre le ferrovie di montagna, anche se non \u00e8 economico, e la vetta \u00e8 raggiungibile anche in funivia dal versante austriaco. Poich\u00e9 la vetta si trova a quasi 3.000 metri di altitudine, in cima fa molto pi\u00f9 freddo e pu\u00f2 nevicare anche in piena estate; \u00e8 quindi indispensabile indossare abiti pesanti, e vale la pena scegliere una giornata serena e partire presto, sia per godersi il panorama che per evitare la folla.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
