It lies in the heart of the old city, close to the Puerta del Sol. The square was completed in 1619, during the reign of King Philip III, by the architect Juan Gómez de Mora. It is a large rectangle, closed on all sides by three-storey buildings with red walls, many balconies and arcades at street level. Over the centuries it was used for markets, bullfights, festivals and royal ceremonies. After several fires, it was rebuilt in its present form at the end of the 18th century by the architect Juan de Villanueva.

Cosa vedere

In the centre of the square stands a bronze statue of King Philip III on horseback. On the north side is the Casa de la Panadería, the oldest building on the square, which was once the city’s main bakery. Its façade is covered with colourful paintings. Nine arched gateways lead into the square from the narrow streets around it, and the most famous is the Arco de Cuchilleros, with steps going down to old taverns. Under the arcades there are cafés, restaurants and traditional shops. Many visitors try a bocadillo de calamares, a fried squid sandwich, which is a typical snack in this area. In December the square hosts a popular Christmas market.

Come arrivare e informazioni pratiche

Plaza Mayor is in the centre of Madrid, a few minutes’ walk from the Puerta del Sol. The nearest metro stations are Sol and Ópera. The square is free and open at all times. Cafés on the square can be more expensive than in the side streets. The square is busy all day and is especially lively in the evening. It is easy to combine with other sights nearby, such as the Mercado de San Miguel, the Royal Palace and the Almudena Cathedral.

<figure class="wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-2
