Castel dell’Ovo is the oldest castle in Naples, in the south of Italy. It stands on the small island of Megaride, joined to the land by a short stone bridge, at the end of the city’s seaside promenade. The ancient Greeks first settled on this island, and later a rich Roman built a villa here. The castle we see today was built and rebuilt many times from the 12th century. Its name means \u201cEgg Castle\u201d. According to a legend, the Roman poet Virgil hid a magic egg in its walls, and if the egg breaks, disaster will come to Naples.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can walk up inside the castle to its terraces, which give beautiful views of the Bay of Naples, Mount Vesuvius and the city. Next to the castle is the Borgo Marinari, a small harbour with fishing boats, yachts and seafood restaurants. The seaside promenade, called the Lungomare, runs from the castle along Via Partenope and Via Caracciolo. It is closed to cars and is very popular for walks, especially at sunset. Along the way there are caf\u00e9s, small beaches and rocks where local people swim in summer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Il castello si trova sul lungomare di Napoli, a circa 10 minuti a piedi da Piazza del Plebiscito. Diverse linee di autobus percorrono il lungomare. L\u2019ingresso al cortile e alle terrazze del castello \u00e8 solitamente gratuito. Alcune parti del castello sono talvolta chiuse per eventi o lavori di restauro, quindi \u00e8 consigliabile verificare prima di recarsi sul posto. Il lungomare \u00e8 gratuito e sempre aperto. \u00c8 particolarmente suggestivo la sera, quando le luci della baia e del Vesuvio vengono illuminate dal sole al tramonto.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
