Castel Nuovo, also called the Maschio Angioino, is one of the symbols of Naples, in the south of Italy. It stands near the port, in the centre of the city. The castle was first built at the end of the 13th century by Charles I of Anjou, the king of Naples, and it became the home of the kings. In the 15th century the new Aragonese rulers rebuilt it with five large round towers. Its name means \u201cNew Castle\u201d, because it was newer than the older castles of the city. Today it houses a civic museum and the meeting hall of the city council.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The most famous feature is the white marble Triumphal Arch at the entrance, between two towers. It was built to celebrate King Alfonso of Aragon and is decorated with fine Renaissance sculptures. Inside you can visit the Barons’ Hall, a huge room with a star-shaped stone ceiling, and the Palatine Chapel. The Civic Museum shows paintings and sculptures from the Middle Ages to the 19th century. In one hall, a glass floor lets you see Roman and medieval remains under the castle. From the towers and walls there are views over the port and the bay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Il castello si trova in Piazza Municipio, nel centro di Napoli, vicino al porto. La stazione della metropolitana pi\u00f9 vicina \u00e8 Municipio, e Piazza del Plebiscito \u00e8 raggiungibile a piedi in pochi minuti. L'ingresso \u00e8 a pagamento e il castello \u00e8 chiuso in alcuni giorni, quindi \u00e8 consigliabile verificare gli orari di apertura prima della visita. Dal porto adiacente al castello partono i traghetti per Capri, Ischia e Sorrento, quindi \u00e8 facile visitarlo prima o dopo un'escursione in barca.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
