The Mosque-Cathedral of C\u00f3rdoba (Mezquita-Catedral) is one of the most remarkable buildings in the world and the supreme monument of Moorish Spain. Begun in 785 by Abd al-Rahman I, the first emir of C\u00f3rdoba, on the site of an earlier church, it was enlarged by successive rulers over two centuries into one of the largest and most magnificent mosques in the world, at the heart of a city that was then the dazzling capital of Islamic Spain. After C\u00f3rdoba fell to the Christians in 1236 the mosque was consecrated as a cathedral, and in the 16th century a full Renaissance church was startlingly inserted into the middle of the prayer hall \u2014 so that today the building is at once a mosque and a cathedral, a unique layering of two great religious cultures. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1984.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stepping inside the vast prayer hall is unforgettable: a seemingly endless forest of more than 850 columns of granite, jasper and marble, many reused from Roman and Visigothic buildings, supporting a canopy of double-tiered arches striped in red brick and white stone \u2014 an effect at once rhythmic and dreamlike. At the far end, the mihrab, the richly decorated prayer niche of the caliphs, glows with golden Byzantine mosaics beneath a scalloped shell vault, a masterpiece of 10th-century art. Rising incongruously but grandly from the centre of this Islamic space is the Christian cathedral added from 1523, with a soaring Gothic-Renaissance nave, ornate choir stalls and Baroque details. Around the building lie the tranquil Courtyard of the Orange Trees (Patio de los Naranjos), where the faithful once performed ablutions, and the bell tower, built around the old minaret, which can be climbed for views over the city and the Guadalquivir.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Mezquita-Catedral stands in the heart of C\u00f3rdoba’s old town, in the province of C\u00f3rdoba in Andalusia, a short walk from the Roman Bridge and the Guadalquivir river and surrounded by the whitewashed lanes of the old Jewish quarter (Juder\u00eda). C\u00f3rdoba is easy to reach by high-speed AVE train, lying on the main line between Madrid, Seville and M\u00e1laga, with journeys of well under two hours from each; from the station it is about a 20-minute walk or a short taxi ride to the monument. Entry is ticketed, with reduced rates for seniors, students and children, and there is a window of free admission early on weekday mornings (though without access to some areas); the bell tower is a separate small charge. Allow at least an hour or two, book ahead in peak season, and combine your visit with a wander through the Juder\u00eda and across the Roman Bridge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
