Palma Cathedral, known to locals simply as La Seu, is the great landmark of Mallorca \u2014 a soaring Gothic cathedral of golden sandstone that rises dramatically above the old walls of Palma, overlooking the sea. Building began in 1229, soon after the Christian conquest of the island, on the site of the former main mosque, and continued for some four centuries, producing one of the tallest and most impressive Gothic interiors in the Mediterranean. Its position right on the waterfront, mirrored in a large pool below, makes it one of the most photographed churches in Spain, especially at sunset when its stone glows amber.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Inside, the cathedral is astonishingly light and lofty, its slender columns rising to high vaults. The great glory is its stained glass, above all the enormous main rose window \u2014 nearly 14 metres across and one of the largest in the Gothic world \u2014 nicknamed the \u201cEye of the Gothic.\u201d Twice a year, in early February and mid-November, the rising sun shines through it to cast a glowing image of the window onto the wall beneath the opposite rose, briefly forming a magical \u201cfigure eight\u201d of light. In the early 20th century the great Catalan architect Antoni Gaud\u00ed carried out a bold restoration, opening up the interior, moving the choir and hanging a dramatic wrought-iron and glass canopy over the altar; a later chapel by the artist Miquel Barcel\u00f3 adds a striking modern note. The rooftop terraces can also be climbed for close-up views of the stonework and the bay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Palma Cathedral stands in the heart of the Mallorcan capital, on the seafront beside the old town and the Almudaina royal palace, a short walk from the port and easily reached on foot, by bus or by taxi; Palma’s airport is around 15 minutes away by car. Entry is ticketed, with reduced rates and free admission for Balearic residents and young children; the cathedral is open to visitors Monday to Saturday, closing to sightseeing on Sundays and during services, with shorter hours in winter. Allow around an hour, more if you climb the terraces (visited on a separate guided tour), and if you can, plan around the February or November light spectacle, which draws crowds well before dawn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
