The Citadel of Besançon is a large military fortress built on Mount Saint-Étienne above the historic center of Besançon, in eastern France. It is one of the most important works designed by the French military engineer Vauban in the 17th century and is part of the UNESCO World Heritage listing of Vauban’s fortifications. The fortress dominates the city and the loop of the Doubs River below, making it a key symbol of Besançon and a major attraction for visitors. The citadel also contains several museums, including the Museum of Resistance and Deportation, which focuses on World War II history, and natural history spaces with animals and exhibitions related to biodiversity.

Besançon is located in the Bourgogne–Franche-Comté region, close to the border with Switzerland. The nearest train station is Besançon-Viotte, the city’s main railway station, with direct regional and national train connections. From Besançon-Viotte, visitors can reach the citadel by local bus, using city bus lines that stop near the main entrance of the site, reducing the amount of uphill walking. It is also possible to walk from the historic city center, but the route is steep and takes about 25–30 minutes. For visitors arriving by train, combining the train with a city bus is the easiest and most comfortable option.

Access to the Citadel of Besançon is paid. A standard adult ticket costs about €11, which includes entry to the fortress, the ramparts, the museums, and the animal park inside the citadel. Reduced prices are available for children, students, and families, and young children usually enter for free.
