Every Easter Sunday, the historic center of Florence transforms into the stage for one of Italy’s most spectacular and ancient traditions: Scoppio del Carro, meaning “Explosion of the Cart.” Held in front of the Cathedral of Florence (the Duomo), this centuries-old ceremony combines religion, history, pageantry, and fireworks in a way that is completely unique to the city. The tradition dates back to the time of the First Crusade in the 11th century, when, according to legend, a Florentine nobleman brought sacred stones back from Jerusalem. These stones were used to light a holy Easter fire, symbolizing peace, prosperity, and a good harvest for the year ahead. To this day, Florentines believe that a successful explosion brings good fortune to the city.

How the Celebration Unfolds

On Easter morning, a massive 17th-century cart known as the Brindellone is pulled through the streets of Florence by white oxen decorated with garlands. The procession is a striking spectacle: participants wear medieval and Renaissance costumes, flag throwers perform in the streets, drummers and musicians create a festive rhythm, and city officials accompany the parade as it moves toward Piazza del Duomo. By late morning, thousands of people gather in the square in anticipation of the main event.

During the Easter Mass inside the cathedral, the Archbishop lights a small rocket shaped like a dove, called the Colombina. The dove travels along a wire from inside the cathedral to the cart waiting outside in the square. When it reaches the cart, it ignites an elaborate fireworks display. The explosion lasts around twenty minutes and fills the piazza with smoke, crackling bursts, loud detonations, and the sound of church bells. If the dove completes its path successfully and the fireworks ignite properly, it is considered a positive omen for Florence.
