Scala dei Turchi (Italian for “Stair of the Turks”) is a striking natural landmark on the southern coast of Sicily, Italy, near the small coastal town of Realmonte in the province of Agrigento. It consists of brilliant white marl and limestone cliffs sculpted by wind and sea into broad, smooth terraces that resemble a staircase descending to the Mediterranean Sea. The site has become one of Sicily’s most iconic coastal attractions due to its unusual geological formation and dramatic contrast with the deep blue sea.

Scala dei Turchi is located between Realmonte and Porto Empedocle, approximately 15–20 km southwest of the city of Agrigento. The cliffs overlook a shoreline of sandy beach that runs along the base of the formation. Access by public transportation is possible via train to Agrigento Centrale followed by a local bus or taxi, but most visitors arrive by car and use designated parking areas along the coastal road SP68. Paid parking lots are available and usually require a short walk down to the beach.

Beach Characteristics

Unlike many classic Italian beaches dominated by pebbles, the beach adjacent to Scala dei Turchi consists of fine sand and small shell fragments, forming a narrow sandy shoreline beneath the white cliffs. The seabed near the base of the rocks varies between sandy and rocky patches, and while swimming is possible, the sea floor can be uneven close to the marl formation itself. The water in this portion of the Mediterranean is typically clear with shades of blue and turquoise, though conditions depend on wind and weather.

Entrance Fees and Facilities

Access to the beach area surrounding Scala dei Turchi is public and generally free, though parking along the coastal road and at nearby lots often involves a fee. In recent years, a controlled access system with limited entry slots has also been introduced for visiting the cliff terraces themselves; tickets may be required for time-slot visits during busy times of the year. There are some small beach bars and seasonal refreshments near the shoreline, but beach infrastructure is minimal compared with fully serviced seaside resorts.

The bathing season in this part of Sicily typically extends from May through October, reflecting the region’s Mediterranean climate characterized by hot, dry summers and mild winters. Average sea temperatures around the Agrigento coast range roughly from:
