Kyra Panagia Beach is a coastal beach on the eastern side of the Greek island of Karpathos in the South Aegean Sea. It lies below the small settlement of Kyra Panagia and is located roughly 14–15 km north of Pigadia (Karpathos Town), the island’s main port and administrative center. The beach is considered one of the most famous and picturesque bathing locations on the island due to its enclosed bay, turquoise water, and dramatic mountain surroundings.

Kyra Panagia Beach is reached via a winding coastal road that descends through mountainous terrain toward the small seaside village of Kyra Panagia. Visitors typically arrive by car or motorcycle, although boat excursions from Pigadia also reach the beach during the tourist season. Parking areas are available near the village, from which a short walk leads directly to the shoreline. The settlement itself is small, with a main street approximately 200 meters long connecting parking areas, taverns, and the beach entrance.

Beach Characteristics

Kyra Panagia Beach forms a small bay between steep rocky hills, creating a sheltered coastal environment. The shoreline consists of a mixture of light sand and smooth pebbles, while the sea is known for its bright turquoise color and high water clarity. The seabed drops relatively quickly in some places, although shallow areas near the shore allow for comfortable swimming. The beach is framed by cliffs and a green valley behind the village, giving it a distinctive landscape that is often considered one of the most scenic on Karpathos.

Entrance Fees and Facilities

Access to Kyra Panagia Beach is public and free. Organized areas with sun loungers and umbrellas are available for rent, and several beach bars, taverns, and small accommodations operate near the shoreline. The beach is considered well organized compared with some more remote beaches on the island, offering facilities such as refreshments, rental equipment, and nearby lodging.

Water Temperature and Climate

Karpathos has a typical Mediterranean climate with long, warm summers and mild winters. The swimming season generally lasts from May to October.

Typical sea temperatures around Karpathos are approximately:

• 20–22 °C in May and June
• 24–26 °C in July and August
• 22–24 °C in September

In winter the water temperature may drop to around 15–18 °C.

Summer air temperatures often reach 28–32 °C, with strong sunshine and occasional Meltemi winds typical of the Aegean region.
