The Main Square of Zamość, known as Rynek Wielki (Grand Market), is located in the historic center of Zamość in southeastern Poland. The square forms the heart of the Old Town and measures approximately 100 × 100 meters, making it one of the largest Renaissance squares in Central Europe. It was designed in the late 16th century as part of a planned “ideal city” founded by the Polish nobleman and chancellor Jan Zamoyski. The town layout and the square were designed by the Italian architect Bernardo Morando. Because of its exceptional Renaissance urban planning and preserved architecture, the historic center of Zamość was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1992.

The main landmark of the square is the Zamość City Hall, a distinctive Renaissance building with a tall tower and a monumental staircase leading to the entrance. The City Hall dates mainly from the 17th century and stands on the northern side of the square, dominating the skyline of the Old Town. The tower rises to about 52 meters, and its clock and green roof make it one of the most recognizable symbols of Zamość. Every day at noon in summer months, a traditional trumpet call is played from the tower balcony.

Surrounding the square are beautifully preserved arcaded Renaissance townhouses, often called the Armenian Houses because many were owned by Armenian merchants who lived in Zamość during the city’s trading peak in the 16th–17th centuries. These buildings are painted in bright colors and decorated with reliefs and ornate facades. Visitors can also see nearby historical attractions such as the Zamość Cathedral, the former Academy of Zamość, and sections of the old fortifications that once protected the city.

The Old Town of Zamość is about 90 km southeast of Lublin and roughly 250 km from Warsaw. Travelers can reach the city by train or bus from major Polish cities, with travel times of about 1.5 hours from Lublin and 3–4 hours from Warsaw. From Zamość railway station, the Main Square is located about 1.5 km away, which is a 20-minute walk through the historic streets. The square itself is pedestrian-friendly and surrounded by cafés, museums, and viewing points, making it the central place where most visitors begin exploring the UNESCO-listed Old Town.
