Bryggen is the old harbour district of Bergen, lining the eastern side of the Vågen bay in the heart of Norway’s second-largest city. It is centrally located and within walking distance of all the main sights, so it is easy to reach on foot from anywhere in the centre. Visitors arriving by air can take the Bybanen light rail from Bergen Airport to the city centre and walk the short remaining distance, while those coming by train can simply walk from the railway station, and cruise passengers reach it in about 10 to 15 minutes from the port. The wharf itself is an open public area, free to wander at any time.

History and What Makes Bryggen Famous

Bryggen is a vivid reminder of Bergen’s importance in the trading empire of the Hanseatic League. In 1360 the German Hansa established one of its four overseas trading offices, or Kontor, here, and German merchants controlled the lucrative export of dried cod (stockfish) from northern Norway for almost four centuries. The district has been ravaged by fire many times, most recently in 1955, but has always been rebuilt following the original layout and traditional timber techniques, with its present appearance largely dating from after the great fire of 1702. Today around 62 wooden buildings survive, their gabled façades painted in red, ochre, yellow, and white. Bryggen was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1979.

The real pleasure of Bryggen lies in exploring the narrow alleys and overhanging galleries behind the famous waterfront, where jewellers, ceramicists, textile designers, and artists now occupy the old merchant houses alongside small shops and cafés. Several museums bring the history to life, including Bryggens Museum, built over the medieval foundations uncovered after the 1955 fire, and the Hanseatic Museum and Schøtstuene. At the far end of the wharf stands Bergenhus Fortress, with the medieval Håkon’s Hall and the 16th-century Rosenkrantz Tower (admission around 150 NOK, free for under-18s). Nearby are the Fløibanen funicular up Mount Fløyen and the lively Fish Market. A tip from regular visitors: explore early in the morning or after the cruise ships have left, as the wharf becomes very crowded at midday.
