The Vasa Museum (Vasamuseet) stands on the island of Djurgården, at Galärvarvsvägen 14, a short distance from the city centre. The most enjoyable way to arrive is on tram line 7 from the central districts, or by the Djurgården ferry from Slussen or Gamla Stan; buses also serve the island, and it is a pleasant walk or cycle from the centre. The museum is the most visited in Scandinavia, so arriving early in the day helps avoid the longest queues.

What Makes the Vasa Museum Famous

The museum is built around a single extraordinary object: the warship Vasa, which capsized and sank in Stockholm harbour on its very first voyage in 1628, weighed down by a top-heavy design. The ship lay on the seabed for 333 years until it was salvaged, remarkably intact, in 1961. Today it is the world’s best-preserved 17th-century ship, its dark oak hull and intricate carvings towering over visitors across several levels. Surrounding exhibitions explore the ship’s construction, the disaster, the salvage operation, and life on board.

Adult admission is 240 SEK from May to September and 195 SEK for the rest of the year, while everyone aged 18 and under enters free; a combination ticket with the nearby Vrak Museum of Wrecks is also available. The museum is cashless, accepting card payment only, and tickets can be bought on arrival. Opening hours are daily 10:00–17:00 from September to May (until 20:00 on Wednesdays) and 08:30–18:00 from June to August. Audio guides and a short film tell the Vasa’s story in many languages, and a couple of hours is a realistic amount of time for a full visit.
