Ettal Abbey (Kloster Ettal) is one of the most impressive monasteries in the Bavarian Alps, its great domed church standing in a green mountain basin at around 900 metres between Oberammergau and Garmisch-Partenkirchen. It was founded in 1330 by Emperor Ludwig the Bavarian, who endowed it with a revered marble statue of the Madonna and built its church around an unusual twelve-sided Gothic rotunda. After a devastating fire in 1744 the monastery was rebuilt in exuberant Baroque and Rococo style, giving it the soaring frescoed dome seen today. A working Benedictine community still lives here, running not only the abbey and its famous pilgrimage church but also a school, a hotel, a brewery and a distillery — a small self-contained world in the mountains.

The heart of the abbey is its basilica, entered through an ornate curved Baroque façade. Inside, the eye is drawn straight up into the vast dome, filled with a swirling fresco by Johann Jakob Zeiller and framed by delicate Rococo stucco and gilding — one of the finest church interiors in the Alps. At its centre is honoured the Ettal Madonna, the marble statue said to have been brought from Italy by the founding emperor and the focus of centuries of pilgrimage. Beyond the church, the monastery is famous for what its monks produce: the Ettal brewery pours several well-regarded beers, and the distillery makes the celebrated Ettaler Klosterlikör, herbal green and yellow liqueurs in the tradition of Chartreuse, both of which can be sampled and bought in the abbey shops. There is also a monastery bookshop, a cheese dairy and a hotel, and guided tours give a closer look at the community’s history and daily life.

Ettal lies in the Alps of Upper Bavaria, roughly 90 kilometres south-west of Munich and only a few kilometres from Oberammergau. There is no railway station in Ettal itself; the usual approach is by car along the scenic B23, or by regional bus from the stations at Oberammergau or Garmisch-Partenkirchen, which are on the rail network from Munich. Visiting the basilica is free and it is open daily to visitors outside of services, while guided tours of the monastery and its workshops are ticketed. The abbey pairs naturally with nearby Linderhof Palace and the painted village of Oberammergau, and its beer garden and shops make it a pleasant stop in their own right amid the mountain scenery.
