Andechs Abbey (Kloster Andechs) sits on the “Holy Mountain” (Heiliger Berg) high above the Ammersee, about 40 kilometres south-west of Munich, and is one of the most popular excursions in all of Upper Bavaria — a place that draws pilgrims and day-trippers alike. Pilgrims have climbed the hill since the 12th century to venerate the relics kept here, and in 1455 Duke Albrecht III founded the Benedictine monastery that still occupies the summit. Perched above the lake with a distinctive onion-domed tower, the abbey combines three very Bavarian pleasures: a glorious Rococo pilgrimage church, a monastery famous for its ancient collection of holy relics, and a celebrated brewery whose strong beers are served in one of the largest and most convivial beer gardens in the region.

The pilgrimage church, medieval in origin, was transformed in the 1750s into a jewel of Bavarian Rococo, its interior alive with frescoes and delicate stucco by Johann Baptist Zimmermann. Above the nave rises the Holy Chapel, home to the abbey’s treasury of relics — among them fragments associated with Christ’s Passion, gathered by the medieval Counts of Andechs, and the skull relic of St Hedwig — which have made Andechs a pilgrimage centre for centuries. In a side chapel lies the grave of the composer Carl Orff, best known for Carmina Burana, who chose to be buried here. The other great draw is entirely earthly: the monastery brewery, brewing on the mountain since the 15th century, whose dark Doppelbock and other beers, together with hearty Bavarian food, are served in the vast Bräustüberl tavern and its terraced beer garden, with sweeping views over the countryside towards the Alps.

Andechs is easy to reach from Munich and makes a classic day out. The most enjoyable way is to take the S-Bahn (line S8) to Herrsching on the Ammersee, then walk up through woods and meadows to the abbey — a scenic climb of around an hour, often through the Kien valley; a local bus also runs up for those who prefer not to walk, and drivers will find car parks near the top. There is no charge to visit the pilgrimage church, which is open daily to visitors and worshippers, while the brewery tavern, beer garden and shop keep restaurant hours. Many people combine a visit with a swim or a boat trip on the Ammersee below, and it is worth remembering that the abbey’s beers are strong, so the downhill walk back to Herrsching is part of the fun.
