西班牙佩尼亚菲尔城堡

Peñafiel Castle is one of the most striking fortresses in Spain, a long, narrow castle of pale stone running along the crest of a slender hill above the town of Peñafiel in the province of Valladolid, in Castile and León. Seen from below, its elongated silhouette — some 210 metres long but only around 20 metres wide — looks uncannily like a great ship of stone run aground on the ridge. A stronghold has guarded this strategic point above the Duero valley since the 10th century, changing hands between Christians and Moors before taking its present form in the 15th century. Today the castle presides over the heart of the celebrated Ribera del Duero wine region, and within its walls it houses the Provincial Wine Museum.

The great pleasure is the castle’s silhouette and setting: walking the long, narrow ward between the outer ramparts and the tall central keep (the Torre del Homenaje), with sweeping views over the red roofs of Peñafiel, the vineyards of the Ribera del Duero and the river valley beyond. Inside the fortress, the Provincial Wine Museum tells the story of viticulture in the region through its history, techniques and culture, and its tasting room offers guided samplings of wines from the Ribera del Duero Denominación de Origen — a fitting way to appreciate one of Spain’s most famous red-wine areas. Down in the town below, it is worth also seeing the remarkable Plaza del Coso, an old arena still used for festivals and ringed by houses with wooden balconies.

Peñafiel lies about 55 kilometres east of Valladolid and roughly midway between Valladolid and Aranda de Duero, in the wine country of the Ribera del Duero. It is most easily reached by car, along the N-122 that follows the Duero, and there are also regional buses from Valladolid, which itself is on the high-speed AVE line from Madrid. The castle sits high above the town, reached by a winding road up to a car park near the gate, or on foot by a steeper climb. A single ticket covers the guided visit to the castle and entry to the Wine Museum; opening hours run morning and late afternoon and it is usually closed on Mondays, so it is worth checking times before visiting. The castle combines naturally with a tour of the surrounding wineries.
