Vienna’s City Hall (Rathaus) is located on the Ring, a wide street built on the site of the former city fortress walls. The building’s exterior is striking and unusual. Although it was constructed at the end of the 19th century, it resembles a Gothic palace, with many arches, spires, and sculptures.

The City Hall is interesting not only from the outside but also inside. It contains multiple small courtyards and luxurious halls where receptions, balls, exhibitions, and concerts are held (classical music only). The building also houses the mayor’s office and the state parliament (Landtag).

The main tower of the City Hall reaches a height of 105 meters. At its top stands a large iron sculpture of a knight, and at the base is an observation deck. Access is by stairs only, as there is no elevator.

In front of the City Hall is a small square called Rathausplatz and a cozy English-style park called City Hall Park. In summer, an open-air cinema operates here, along with a stage for concerts and events. During Christmas, the area hosts a festive Christmas market, and in winter, starting from the end of January, a large ice skating rink opens. Watching concerts and movies is free, but tickets for the skating rink cost around 6.50 euros.

We were unable to visit inside the building because no events were taking place and the entrance was closed. The Christmas market operates until December 25, so visiting Vienna around New Year means you might only see workers dismantling stalls. The skating rink opens only at the end of January.

How to get there:
Vienna City Hall is easy to reach. It is located on the Ring, close to other attractions such as the Austrian Parliament, Hofburg Palace, University of Vienna, and Burgtheater. It takes about 5–7 minutes to walk from the Hofburg to the Town Hall. The nearest metro station is Rathaus on line U2.
