Neve Tzedek district, Tel Aviv

Neve Tzedek (Hebrew: נווה צדק‎, “Abode of Justice”) is one of the oldest districts of Tel Aviv, Israel. It was founded in 1887 as a fashionable suburb of Jaffa, at a time when Tel Aviv did not yet exist. Later, as Tel Aviv expanded, Neve Tzedek was absorbed into the growing metropolis. Today, it is considered one of Tel Aviv’s most picturesque and bohemian neighborhoods, known for its narrow streets, historic houses, museums, artisan shops, galleries, and cafés.

Neve Tzedek was established as one of the first Jewish neighborhoods outside Jaffa, which was then predominantly Arab. Built according to European urban models of the late 19th century, the quarter featured a grid layout and low stone houses with tiled roofs, earning it the nickname “the Parisian Quarter.”

During Tel Aviv’s rapid growth in the 20th century, Neve Tzedek became marginalized and fell into decline. In the mid-20th century, many buildings were abandoned, and plans were even made to demolish the district to build modern high-rises. However, beginning in the late 1970s, conservation efforts saved Neve Tzedek, and large-scale restoration transformed it into a protected historical and architectural area.

Present Day

Today, Neve Tzedek is one of Tel Aviv’s most popular tourist destinations. Its narrow lanes are lined with low one- and two-story buildings, many of which now house:

Museums, including the Nahum Gutman Museum of Art and the Shimon Rokach House, dedicated to the neighborhood’s history.
Art galleries, design studios, and jewelry shops.
Cafés, boutiques, and boutique hotels.

A notable attraction is the House of Tamar, residence of sculptor Tamar Erez, whose façade is adorned with whimsical sculptures of people. The area is also home to Tel Aviv’s first cinema, opened in 1913.

Neve Tzedek lies southwest of Rothschild Boulevard, between the boulevard and the HaTachana railway station, making it easily accessible on foot from Tel Aviv’s city center.
