Plaza de España is one of the largest and most significant squares in Barcelona. The square acquired its modern appearance in 1929, when an ensemble of buildings was constructed at the foot of Montjuïc Mountain for the Barcelona International Exhibition. Plaza de España served as the main entrance to the exhibition.

The square is an important transport hub where several major streets and avenues intersect. It is served by the Plaza España metro station (lines L1, L3, L8) and a commuter train stop. Several bus routes, including 37, 65, 79, 91, 109, and 165, also stop here. Plaza de España can also be visited as part of a city sightseeing bus tour.

The architectural ensemble of Plaza de España includes the former city bullring, now the Las Arenas Shopping Center, a neoclassical monumental fountain, and two Venetian towers, each 47 meters high. Queen Maria Cristina Avenue extends from the square toward Montjuïc Mountain and the National Art Museum of Catalonia. Along the avenue, there are several fountains, including the Magic Fountain of Montjuïc, which hosts regular light and water shows in the evenings.

Various events, including exhibitions and fairs, continue to take place in the square. In the evening, the buildings, fountains, and sculptures are illuminated, creating a distinctive cityscape. Adjacent to Plaza de España is the Poble Espanyol, an open-air museum featuring replicas of traditional Spanish architecture and ethnographic exhibits.
