The Festival of San Ferm\u00edn is a world-famous annual celebration held in Pamplona, the capital of the autonomous region of Navarra in northern Spain. The festival combines religious tradition, cultural pageantry, nightly entertainment, bullfights, and, most famously, the running of the bulls (encierro).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The festival honors Saint Ferm\u00edn, a 3rd-century Christian martyr who became one of the patron saints of Pamplona. Historically, the festival merges three traditions: the religious commemoration of San Ferm\u00edn, a seasonal livestock fair, and the practice of herding bulls through the city\u2019s streets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The most internationally recognized event of San Ferm\u00edn is the running of the bulls, which takes place each morning from 7 to 14 July, beginning at 8:00 AM. The route starts at the corral at Santo Domingo and winds through the walled-off narrow streets of Pamplona\u2019s old quarter, covering roughly 825\u2013848 meters before reaching the bullring (Plaza de Toros). Each run involves six fighting bulls escorted by steers to keep them on course.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
