Entry to the monastery courtyard and main church is free of charge. However, access to the monastery museum, which displays icons, manuscripts, and historical objects, requires a ticket. Rila Monastery is most easily reached from Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria. From Sofia Central Bus Station, there are regular buses to the town of Dupnitsa or Blagoevgrad (travel time about 1.5\u20132 hours). From either of these towns, you need to change to a local bus or taxi that goes directly to Rila Monastery; this final leg takes about 1 hour. On weekends and during the tourist season, there are also direct buses from Sofia to Rila Monastery, which are the simplest option if available.
