The historic centre of Toru\u0144 is located in northern Poland on the banks of the Vistula River, about 180 km northwest of Warsaw and 50 km southeast of Bydgoszcz. The city was founded in the 13th century by the Teutonic Order and quickly became an important \u0442\u043e\u0440\u0433\u043e\u0432\u044b\u0439 center within the Hanseatic League. Thanks to its preserved medieval layout and architecture, the Old Town of Toru\u0144 was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1997 as one of the finest examples of a Gothic trading city in Europe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Toru\u0144 is particularly famous for its brick Gothic architecture, which dominates the historic centre. The city layout includes two main parts\u2014the Old Town and the New Town\u2014both \u0441\u043e\u0445\u0440\u0430\u043d\u0438\u0432\u0448\u0438\u0435\u0441\u044f with their original street plans, defensive walls, and merchant houses. Toru\u0144 is also known as the birthplace of the astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus, whose house is now a museum located within the Old Town.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The central point of the Old Town is the Old Market Square, where visitors can see the impressive Toru\u0144 Town Hall, one of the most outstanding examples of medieval civic architecture in Europe. The square is surrounded by colorful merchant houses and historic buildings that reflect the city\u2019s former wealth. Nearby landmarks include the St. John\u2019s Cathedral, Toru\u0144, a major Gothic church, and the remains of medieval defensive walls and towers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another important attraction is the Leaning Tower of Toru\u0144, a slightly tilted structure that has become one of the city\u2019s symbols. Visitors can also explore the Copernicus House Museum, medieval gates, and riverfront viewpoints along the Vistula. The city is also famous for its traditional gingerbread (pierniki), which has been produced in Toru\u0144 since the Middle Ages and can be tasted in local shops and museums.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The historic centre is easily accessible from major Polish cities. From Warsaw, the journey takes about 2.5 hours by train, while from Gda\u0144sk it takes around 2 hours. Toru\u0144\u2019s main railway station is located about 2 km from the Old Town, which can be reached in 10\u201315 minutes by bus, taxi, or a 25-minute walk. The Old Town itself is largely pedestrian and compact, making it easy to explore on foot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Entry to the historic centre is free, while individual museums and attractions charge admission fees, typically ranging from \u20ac3 to \u20ac10. A full visit to Toru\u0144\u2019s Old Town usually takes half a day to a full day, depending on how many museums and landmarks are included.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
