The Urnes Stave Church is located in the village of Ornes on the eastern shore of the Lustrafjord, a branch of the larger Sognefjord. The church stands in a remote rural landscape in western Norway, approximately 270 km northwest of Oslo. It was built around 1130 and is considered the oldest surviving stave church in Norway, representing a key example of medieval wooden architecture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Urnes Stave Church is particularly famous for its ornamental wood carvings, which combine traditional Viking art with early Christian symbolism. The most notable feature is the richly decorated north portal, where intertwined animal figures form a complex pattern known as the \u201cUrnes style\u201d, which became an important artistic tradition in Scandinavia. From Solvorn, a short ferry crossing (about 15 minutes) takes visitors across the fjord to Ornes. From the ferry landing, the church is located about 2 km uphill, accessible by foot or car. The journey itself offers scenic views of fjords and mountains typical of western Norway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Entrance to the church requires a ticket, typically costing around \u20ac10\u2013\u20ac12 for adults, and the site is open mainly during the tourist season (May to September). A visit usually takes 30\u201360 minutes, as the church is compact but rich in historical detail.
