Drottningholm Palace sits on the island of Lov\u00f6n in Lake M\u00e4laren, about 10 kilometres west of central Stockholm. The most scenic way to arrive is by boat: historic vessels cross Lake M\u00e4laren from Stadshuskajen, the quay beside the City Hall, in around 50 to 60 minutes, with a return ticket costing roughly 210 SEK. Alternatively, you can take the metro to Brommaplan and change to a local bus, which is quicker and cheaper. The palace and grounds are open to the public year-round, though the southern wing remains the private residence of the royal family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

History and What Makes Drottningholm Famous<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Begun in the late 17th century by the architects Nicodemus Tessin the Elder and his son, and inspired by French models such as Versailles, Drottningholm is the best-preserved royal palace of its era in Sweden. It became the country’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1991, recognised as a complete example of a European royal residence of the 17th and 18th centuries. The site is far more than the palace itself: it includes the beautifully preserved Drottningholm Court Theatre, which still uses its original 18th-century stage machinery, the exotic Chinese Pavilion (Kina slott) in the grounds, and formal Baroque gardens with clipped hedges, fountains, and statues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What to See and Ticket Information<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Adult admission to the palace interiors is around 170 SEK, with reduced or free entry for children and young people, and it is included in the Go City Stockholm Pass; the Court Theatre and Chinese Pavilion may require separate tickets. Visitors can explore the state rooms independently or join a guided tour for more context. The surrounding park is free to wander and makes a lovely setting for a walk or picnic, so it is worth allowing several hours, especially if you arrive by boat. As a working royal residence, parts of the palace may occasionally close for official events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
